Write whenever you can
Chatting to a friend about her writing schedule as a full-time traveller, I was surprised to learn that… she doesn’t have one.
How do you stick to a writing routine?, I asked her.
I don’t, she said with a laugh. I wish I did, but the reality is, I just write whenever I can.
While sticking to a regular writing routine might work for some, for others it might not.
And I’ve surely been there too.
Even though nowadays I do tent to make space to write before work and in the weekends to fit writing around my 9 to 5, I have been through phases where I didn’t have such a linear weekly schedule: I worked a different shift every day, or I didn’t have a desk — or even a house — I could work from at the same time every day.
Even now, I often write whenever I can.
I do believe it’s important to plan, but it’s also true that inspiration plays a big role in producing good writing (and giving you the motivation to make the time to write).
Sometimes, you just ‘feel like writing’ — and if you can, it’s the best time to do so.
