The best place to get inspired is away from your desk
Have you ever wondered why you come up with your best creative ideas in the most inappropriate situations? In the shower, while on a run — mostly in places where you don’t have anything to write your ideas down.
What about when you’ve been trying to write an essay for two hours to no avail, and the moment you decide to take a break and go for a walk outside, suddenly inspiration hits you?
We often think that if we’re not hunched over our laptop typing away, we’re wasting our time — when in fact, taking a break from the screen is often the best thing we can do to allow space for creativity.
When we are stuck and can’t come up with new topics or ideas, we don’t allow ourselves to leave our desk, and instead we force ourselves to think harder — surely something will come up.
As it turns out, the best state of mind for idea generation is an alpha state, one of light relaxation where we can access our subconscious and let our mind wander and associate thoughts in unique ways.
It’s essential to alternate this state to the rational and logical one we adopt at work, which is often too rigid to let our creatvity spark.
