Sometimes I catch myself sitting around and thinking, I’m gonna be a better Zero Waster. Yes!, I tell myself. And the I proceed to do… nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
Believe it or not, nothing is the first thing you should do if you want to play your part in saving the planet.
Let me explain.
This is what makes you good at Zero Waste:
- Use what you have
The most sustainable option is the one you already have. You don’t need to go out and buy a bamboo toothbrush if you already have a regular one. There’s no need to replace all your plastic Tupperwares with metal ones, or to relocate your spices into a set of cute matching little glass containers.
Zero waste is not pretty: use up your cleaning spray and when you run out, refill the bottle you already have (yes, even if it’s made of ugly plastic) instead of buying a brand new glass spray bottle.
This goes for food as well — don’t rush and buy a bunch of quinoa from the bulk shop. Clean up your pantry first! - Consume less
This is easy: buy less shit. You literally have to buy NOTHING to be a Zero Waster. Buy second hand? Sure, but try to just not buy anything instead. It’s a far more sustainable option. (You probably already have what you need already.)
Buy things when you need them, obviously, but don’t…
