I wish I were useless
Working through lockdown in 2020 was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.
I live in Wellington, New Zealand, so I’m experiencing a relatively softer version of the Covid 19 pandemic than the rest of the world. However, I am from the north of Italy, where my parents and the rest of my family currently live, and where the virus first exploded in January 2020.
Witnessing how quickly it spread and how deadly it was scared the bejesus out of me. Some of my friends and family members got sick, some died. All I could do was watch as the events unfolded, powerless and unable to help.
When Covid landed in New Zealand, we were made fun of.
Granted, it was nothing compared to other countries. We only had over 2000 cases in the entire country by the end of 2020. Lombardia, the region I am from, at some point had 6000 cases in one single day.
However, I work in a grocery store, so the “stay safe, stay home” option wasn’t available to me.
All of a sudden, I was essential.
After the first case was reported in New Zealand, we went from Level 1 to 4 in a matter of days.
